Our Story
Jamii Rescue Organization (JRO) was founded in 2025 by a group of Tanzanian professionals who had seen, in different ways, how quickly a single challenge can affect an entire family or community.
They had seen families pushed deeper into poverty because of illness. They had seen coastal and rural communities struggle as changing climate conditions affected the environments and livelihoods they depend on. They had seen children and vulnerable families face uncertainty during times of crisis, and households struggle without reliable access to clean energy. Behind each of these challenges were people trying to protect their families, earn a living, stay healthy, and build a better future.
Communities do not experience their challenges in separate sectors, so solutions should not be designed in isolation.
JRO was created from that conviction. The founding team came together to build an organization that could work alongside communities to address immediate needs while also helping people strengthen their livelihoods, protect their environment, access essential services, and become more resilient to future shocks.
JRO was established as a non-political, non-profit, community-centered organization under Tanzania’s NGO Act, 2002, with its head office in Dar es Salaam and a mandate to operate across mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Our Constitution sets out four interconnected areas of work: Health and Well-being; Conservation and Climate Resilience; Humanitarian Response and Protection; and Renewable and Sustainable Energy. These areas provide the foundation for our programmes and reflect our belief that healthier people, protected communities, sustainable livelihoods, healthy ecosystems, and access to clean energy are all part of building lasting resilience.
As a young, locally founded organization, our story is still unfolding. We know that the most meaningful chapters will not be written in our offices, but in the communities we work alongside, in the families who become more resilient, the children who find safety and opportunity, the communities that protect their natural resources, and the people who gain new opportunities to build sustainable livelihoods.
We are at the beginning of that journey, and we are committed to building it together with the communities we serve.

Team & Governance
JRO is powered by a diverse team of Tanzanian professionals, community practitioners, programme specialists, and emerging leaders committed to strengthening the well-being and resilience of communities. Our team brings together expertise across health and community well-being, environmental conservation and climate resilience, humanitarian response and protection, renewable energy, legal and governance, and Information, Communication and Technology (ICT).
This combination of skills allows us to bring different perspectives to complex community challenges. We value both professional expertise and community knowledge, recognizing that sustainable solutions are strongest when technical knowledge is combined with the lived experiences and priorities of the people we serve. Women, young professionals, and community voices are encouraged to take meaningful roles across our programmes and decision-making processes.
Our governance is anchored in accountability, transparency, participation, and responsible leadership. JRO is guided by an Executive Committee that provides strategic oversight, approves key plans and budgets, reviews organizational performance, and ensures that our work remains aligned with our mission and constitutional objectives. The Executive Director provides overall leadership and coordinates day-to-day operations, working alongside the General Secretary, Treasurer, Programme and Operations Coordinator, Heads of Department, and other members of the leadership team.
We believe good governance is not only about structures and policies, it is about how an organization listens, learns, and remains accountable to the people and partners it serves. We therefore promote open communication, regular programme review, community participation, partner engagement, sound financial management, and evidence-based decision-making. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, learning, feedback, and reflection are integral to how we improve our work.
As a locally founded organization, we are committed to building a team culture defined by collaboration, integrity, inclusion, professionalism, and innovation. Every team member has a role in shaping JRO’s growth, and we encourage people to bring ideas, question assumptions, learn from experience, and work together across sectors.
We are proud to be building a Tanzanian organization that combines local understanding, professional expertise, accountable governance, and a strong commitment to the communities we serve.
